What's new in Honda City

  • The 2026 Honda City gets a new black colour option, a full-width LED light bar with projector headlamps, and an updated ivory white interior theme. It also adds a 360-degree camera system, a more efficient hybrid powertrain, and a larger infotainment touchscreen.

Honda City Overview

The new Honda City has officially been launched in India with prices starting from ₹11.99 lakh and going up to ₹20.99 lakh for the strong hybrid variant. Available in SV, V, ZX and ZX+ trims, the updated sedan gets a sharper exterior design with connected lighting, new DRLs, Bi-LED projector headlamps and AeroBlade alloy wheels.

Inside, Honda has added a larger digital cluster, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, lounge-style rear seats and a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The sedan continues with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine paired to either a 6-speed manual or CVT gearbox, while the e:HEV strong hybrid version uses a two-motor setup with 253 Nm torque and a claimed 27.26 kmpl fuel efficiency. Honda has also introduced Level 2 ADAS across petrol and hybrid variants with features like automatic emergency braking, lane sensing assist and a new 360-degree camera.

Pre-launch bookings are now open, while deliveries will begin in the second half of July.

Engine and Performance

The new Honda City continues to offer two main powertrain options that cater to different driving needs. The standard 1.5 liter i-VTEC four cylinder petrol engine produces 121 horsepower and 145 Newton meters of torque, and it can be paired with either a six speed manual transmission or a smooth CVT automatic.

If you want more tech, the e:HEV strong hybrid variant combines a 1.5 liter Atkinson cycle engine with a dual motor electric system to produce a combined 126 horsepower and a massive 253 Newton meters of peak torque. This hybrid version uses an e-CVT and is capable of running in pure electric mode during low speed city crawls

fuel economy

Efficiency is where the City really shines, especially with the latest tweaks to the hybrid system. The standard petrol variants deliver between 17.77 and 17.97 kilometers per liter depending on whether you choose the manual or the CVT.

The strong hybrid e:HEV model has seen its efficiency improved to a claimed 27.26 kilometers per liter, which is up slightly from the previous version. This makes it an incredibly economical choice for high mileage drivers who want to avoid frequent stops at the fuel station.

interior

Inside the cabin, Honda has addressed several long standing requests from customers. The center stage is now taken by a larger 10.1 inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system that is about sixty five percent bigger than before and supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

For comfort, Honda has finally included front ventilated seats and added a new ivory white interior theme with satin silver trim that replaces the older wood panels. You still get the class leading rear legroom and a massive 506 liter boot, though the hybrid version loses some of that space to accommodate the battery pack.

exterior

The 2026 facelift introduces a sharper front end with a new honeycomb mesh grille and redesigned bi-projector LED headlamps that Honda claims offer twice the illumination reach of the old units. The front and rear bumpers look more aggressive with new carbon wrapped diffuser elements, and the car sits on updated 16 inch dual tone diamond cut alloy wheels.

A notable addition for this year is the introduction of a formal black exterior color option and smoked LED tail lamps that give the sedan a more premium and stealthy appearance on the road.

safety

Safety has been bolstered by making six airbags standard across every single variant in the lineup. A major new feature is the 360 degree camera system which works in tandem with the LaneWatch blind spot camera to provide a full view of your surroundings during tight maneuvers.

The higher trims also feature the Level 2 Honda Sensing ADAS suite, which provides high tech driver aids like adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, lane keeping assist, and a lead car departure notification system that alerts you when the car ahead starts moving in traffic

competition

The City is currently facing its toughest competition yet in the mid size sedan segment. Its main rival is the Hyundai Verna, which offers a more futuristic design and a very powerful 1.5 liter turbo petrol engine for enthusiasts.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia provide a more robust European driving feel with superior high speed stability and turbocharged performance. The City has to rely on its reputation for bulletproof reliability, better resale value, and the superior fuel efficiency of its strong hybrid powertrain to win over buyers.

final verdict

We haven’t reviewed the car yet, so we will reserve any critical judgment. However, we have seen the car in person and really liked the fact that Honda didn’t go overboard with the styling and kept it limited to minor nips and tucks. The full-width LED bar is a deal-breaker for me, although it was expected to be offered only on top models but it turned out to be standard.

Design is subjective though, and you might like it. Other than that, my teammates were disappointed as they expected something far more comprehensive, which will likely debut in the next 2 years with the 6th-gen Honda City. Until then, Honda has decided to focus on younger buyers with new colours, a larger infotainment screen, and, thankfully, the same price tag of ₹12 lakh ex-showroom.

The i-VTEC is still very much alive and kicking, compared to the rough three-cylinder engines in the Virtus and Slavia, It is on a whole other level of refinement.

Honda City FAQs

Deliveries are expected to start in the second half of July 2026, after bookings open and initial allocations begin at dealerships.
Test drives will begin as early as next week, as the new model is already in showrooms
The 6th generation Honda City will debut sometime in 2028
The petrol manual returns 17.77 kpl and the petrol CVT does 17.97 kpl as per ARAI figures. The hybrid e:HEV tops the chart at 27.26 kpl claimed. All variants share a 40-litre fuel tank.
For the hybrid Honda City e:HEV, you can expect anywhere between 22 to even 30 kmpl while driving at 60 to 70 kmph on highways. In city conditions, the mileage usually drops to around 20 to 21 kmpl. For the regular petrol Honda City, 10 to 14 kmpl is achievable in daily driving, while highway mileage can go up to around 15 to 16 kmpl.
Six colours are on offer: Crystal Black Pearl, Radiant Red Metallic, Obsidian Blue Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, and Meteoroid Gray Metallic. The evil looking Crystal Black Pearl is a new addition for this facelift
The dashboard gains a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and ambient lighting are new additions. The 8-speaker sound system is also new to the equipment list. On the outside, the front gets a revised grille with an LED light bar, new 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and clear lens LED tail lamps. Mechanically, nothing changes
The petrol i-VTEC produces 121 hp and 145 Nm. The hybrid e:HEV makes 126 hp system power and 253 Nm, using a 1.5-litre engine paired with a lithium-ion battery and dual electric motors.
The City e:HEV is not a plug-in hybrid, so there is no defined EV-only range figure in km. Below 30-40 kmph in city traffic with light loads, the car drives entirely on battery power from the main electric motor with the engine off and zero fuel consumption. This is why city owners consistently report 23-25 kpl. The battery self-charges while driving and cannot be plugged in
No. The petrol variants come with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT. The hybrid gets an e-CVT. There is no dual-clutch transmission on offer in any variant
Not in GNCAP terms. The 4th-generation City received a 4-star Global NCAP rating, scoring 12.03/17 for adult occupant protection. The 5th-generation City, which includes this facelift, has not yet been tested by Global NCAP. A 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating exists for some markets, but that uses different test protocols.
The ground clearance is 165 mm, unchanged from the pre-facelift model. That is on the lower side for Indian roads and a known pain point for owners, especially in heavily potholed cities
Ventilated front seats are exclusive to the ZX+ variant, along with power windows with auto fold, remote sunroof operation, and a sporty seat design. The ZX+ petrol CVT is the cheapest non-hybrid way to get ventilated seats on the City
The V variant carries the full Honda Sensing Level 2 ADAS suite including Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto High-Beam, Lane Keeping Assist, and Road Departure Mitigation. The V petrol MT is thus the most affordable City with ADAS.
The CVT in automatic variants exhibits a rubber-band effect with sluggish throttle response, underbody scraping on speed bumps is reported by 5th-gen owners due to the 165 mm clearance, and the AC system is reported as weak during harsh summers. Sunroof-equipped variants have also attracted clattering noises over rough roads due to improper fitment of the sunroof glass. Water ingress into the cabin during heavy rains has also been flagged by a subset of owners on forums like Team-BHP
