Why Choose MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV?Why choose
- Plug-in hybrid powertrain with 115km of pure electric range and a combined 1,100km-plus range on a full tank and charge is a fundamentally different running-cost proposition from the Safari's petrol or diesel
- Claimed PHEV efficiency of approximately 40kmpl for buyers who charge daily makes it the most fuel-efficient three-row SUV in this segment by a wide margin
- Third-row AC is standard, and the PHEV powertrain adds NVH refinement in pure-electric mode that the Safari's petrol and diesel engines do not approach
- BaaS pricing creates a lower upfront cost route that the Safari's outright purchase price does not match
- At a comparable configured price, the Tomahawk PHEV's technology package offers the novelty of India's first mass-market PHEV and the ownership cost benefit that flows from it for the right buyer profile
Why not choose
- No crash test rating from Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP at launch; the Safari holds 5-star ratings from both testing bodies a safety credential the Tomahawk PHEV cannot challenge at this stage
- PHEV powertrain benefits evaporate for buyers who do not charge consistently; a buyer who cannot charge at home will carry the heavier PHEV powertrain on petrol alone and will find the Safari's diesel more efficient in practice
- Tata's service network is wider than MG's, and the Safari has established service knowledge across the country that the Tomahawk PHEV as a brand-new PHEV does not yet have
- The Safari offers Level 2+ ADAS with 22 functions across higher variants, a 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen, and a feature density that the Tomahawk PHEV's launch spec does not fully match
Why Choose Tata Safari?Why choose
- 5-star ratings from both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP for adult and child occupant protection the strongest crash safety credential in this segment, which the Tomahawk PHEV cannot match
- Level 2+ ADAS with 22 functions, including adaptive cruise, lane-keep, and autonomous emergency braking, is available across higher variants and is one of the most comprehensive ADAS suites in the three-row SUV segment
- Both 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel at 170PS are available, each pairing with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic; buyers can choose fuel type and gearbox without compromising features
- Tata's service network is among the widest for any non-Maruti brand in India, with established Safari-specific expertise and parts availability in cities where MG's PHEV support is limited or absent
- A 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen, ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof and dual-zone climate control create a well-equipped cabin for a family SUV at this price
Why not choose
- No plug-in hybrid powertrain; the Safari's running costs from petrol or diesel are significantly higher than the Tomahawk PHEV for buyers who can charge at home the fuel saving the PHEV delivers over three years is real money
- The Safari's third-row legroom draws consistent criticism from owners; adults in row three find the space adequate for short runs but uncomfortable on longer journeys
- Petrol fuel economy under 14kmpl in heavy urban use is a running-cost concern for buyers who cover 1,500 or more kilometres per month without the option of charging
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersMG Hector Tomahawk PHEV
The Tomahawk PHEV's argument is running costs, and for buyers who can charge at home or at work every day, the argument is genuinely strong. A claimed 40kmpl in PHEV mode translates to a per-kilometre fuel cost that no diesel Safari can approach over three years of consistent charging, and the electric-mode NVH refinement is a daily quality-of-life benefit that Safari buyers do not experience.
The crash test absence is the most serious gap: the Safari's dual 5-star credential is a meaningful safety advantage that the Tomahawk PHEV does not yet answer. Buyers who cannot charge consistently should choose the Safari's diesel instead the PHEV's advantage disappears without regular charging.
Tata Safari
The Safari's strongest arguments are the ones that do not depend on buyer behaviour: verified crash safety from both NCAP bodies, a 22-function ADAS suite, and Tata's service reach that covers the country. These benefits apply to every owner on every day, regardless of whether they charge at home or live in a small town.
The fuel cost disadvantage relative to the Tomahawk PHEV for charging-capable buyers is real, and buyers who can charge should run the three-year cost comparison before deciding. For buyers who cannot charge, who live outside major cities, or who want verified crash credentials and established after-sales support, the Safari is the more complete and lower-risk answer.
