Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV?Why choose
- Plug-in hybrid powertrain with 115km pure-electric range and 1,100km-plus combined range is a running-cost advantage the Crysta's diesel engine cannot match for buyers who charge consistently
- More feature-dense cabin with a modern infotainment system, connected car features, and contemporary technology that the Crysta's relatively simple interior does not offer at any variant
- Available with both 5-seat and 7-seat configurations; the Crysta is 7-seat or 8-seat only
- BaaS pricing lowers the entry cost, which makes the PHEV accessible to buyers whose budget aligns better with the Crysta's range than with the Tomahawk PHEV's outright price
- Monocoque construction gives it noticeably better on-road ride quality and lower noise levels in electric mode than the Crysta's ladder-frame body produces
Why not choose
- No crash test rating from Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP; the Crysta's decades-long track record and Toyota's global safety standards give buyers a structural confidence the Tomahawk PHEV cannot currently match with published data
- Toyota's reliability reputation and the Crysta's ownership track record established over two decades and millions of units is something no new nameplate can replicate at launch
- MG's service network is substantially narrower than Toyota's, and the Crysta's service ecosystem is one of the deepest in India with widespread parts availability and technician knowledge
- The Crysta's 2.4-litre diesel with 343Nm is a torquey, proven long-distance tool; buyers who cover 2,000 or more kilometres per month on highways will find the diesel's low-end pull more practically useful than the PHEV's electric mode
Why Choose Toyota Innova Crysta? Why choose
- A track record spanning over two decades and more than 1.3 million units sold in India makes the Crysta the most proven three-row people mover in this segment no rival can replicate this ownership history
- The 2.4-litre diesel producing 150PS and 343Nm is available only with a 5-speed manual, but delivers effortless low-speed torque that makes fully loaded long-distance journeys feel composed in a way that no petrol or PHEV rival matches
- Toyota's service network across India is among the most comprehensive of any non-Maruti brand, with established Crysta-specific service expertise in cities, towns and highways
- The ladder-frame construction and proven mechanicals mean long-term maintenance costs and component longevity are well understood by owners, fleet operators and independent mechanics alike
- Resale values are consistently the strongest in the three-row MPV and SUV segment; a Crysta depreciates more slowly than almost any direct rival at comparable age and mileage
Why not choose
- Only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox; the automatic transmission option was discontinued, making the Crysta inaccessible to buyers who need two-pedal convenience in city traffic
- No ADAS of any kind across any variant; the Tomahawk PHEV brings driver assistance technology that the Crysta has never offered
- The cabin, while spacious and well-built, is technologically dated by current standards: no large touchscreen, no wireless connectivity, no digital instrument cluster on lower variants
- Fuel costs from the diesel, while lower than a petrol equivalent, are meaningfully higher than the Tomahawk PHEV's claimed 40kmpl for buyers who charge at home daily
- Discontinuation planned for 2027, which will progressively reduce new-car availability and may affect long-term parts supply for buyers who expect to keep the car for a decade
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersMG Hector Tomahawk PHEV
For buyers who want modern technology, PHEV running cost savings, and do not specifically need the Crysta's diesel torque on long-distance loaded runs, the Tomahawk PHEV offers a more contemporary product. The electric-mode refinement, connected car features, and combined range well above 1,000km address the most common concerns about PHEV practicality.
The Crysta's absence of any automatic gearbox is the clearest structural disadvantage in urban use, and the Tomahawk PHEV's monocoque ride quality is noticeably better on daily roads. Buyers who charge at home daily and want a modern, feature-rich family SUV should take the Tomahawk PHEV seriously, accepting the newer nameplate's service network risk.
Toyota Innova Crysta
For buyers who prioritise proven reliability, diesel torque on long-distance loaded journeys, strong resale, and a service network that covers every corner of India, the Crysta remains a benchmark. No competitor with a new nameplate can replicate 20 years of owner data, and the Crysta's ladder-frame diesel combination is the most capable high-mileage tool in this comparison for fleet-adjacent buyers and families who take regular multi-hundred-kilometre journeys with a full load. The absence of an automatic gearbox is the critical limitation for city buyers.
The Crysta's planned discontinuation in 2027 means buyers are also choosing a model in its final year of regular production, which is a factor worth considering for anyone planning a long ownership period. The Tomahawk PHEV is a better daily car for urban family use; the Crysta is the better long-distance diesel workhorse.
