Few MPVs in India have stayed relevant as long as the Toyota Innova Crysta. A 2.4-litre diesel, seating for up to eight, and a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating give the fundamentals, while Toyota's reputation does the rest. For buyers who need dependable, all-weather, long-haul people-mover capability, the Crysta is still the one to beat.

Toyota Innova Crysta Latest Updates

According to industry reports, Toyota is planning to discontinue the Innova Crysta diesel in India around March 2027, which was originally meant to exit closer to 2025, but sustained demand and semiconductor constraints on the Innova Hycross prompted Toyota to keep the Crysta in production longer than planned.

India's upcoming CAFE 3 norms is the primary driver behind its discontinuation, as it makes it increasingly difficult for conventional diesel vehicles to comply, while Toyota's strong hybrids benefit from "super credits" that effectively count each Hycross sold twice toward the company's fleet CO2 target.

The Crysta continues to be listed on Toyota's Indian website with all variants available for order, indicating the phase-out will be gradual rather than an immediate halt.

Toyota Innova Crysta Overview

Updated on March 25, 2026

The Toyota Innova Crysta is the second-generation Innova, launched in India in 2016 with a sharper exterior, a more premium interior, and improved refinement over its predecessor. A facelift followed in 2021, updating the front grille, bringing LED projector headlamps to upper variants, and expanding the feature list.

Under the bonnet, every variant shares the same 2,393cc diesel engine, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Feature content scales significantly by variant, automatic climate control, leather seating, smart entry, cruise control, and a 7-airbag setup appear higher up the range, while ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay are available much earlier in the range. Most configurations offer seating for seven or eight passengers.

On the safety front, the Crysta scored 82.69 points to earn a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating in 2020.

Engine and Performance

The Innova Crysta is powered by a single 2,393cc four-cylinder diesel engine across the entire range. It produces 148bhp at 3,400rpm and 343Nm of torque between 1,400 and 2,800rpm, a notably wide band, meaning the Crysta doesn't need to be revved hard to move a full load of passengers.

The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox across all variants and there is no automatic option in the current Crysta lineup.

Additionally, it is BS6 Phase 2 compliant, meeting India's current emission standard.

fuel economy

The Crysta is a diesel-only vehicle, and ECO and Power drive modes are available on every variant, adjusting throttle response to favour either moderate fuel efficiency or engine output depending on conditions, and the engine's broad torque delivery from as low as 1,400rpm reduces the need for sustained high-revving under load, a characteristic that generally aids real-world efficiency when carrying multiple passengers.

interior

The Crysta's cabin is designed around passenger comfort over long distances. Front seats offer slide, recline, and driver height adjustment from the mid-variant upward, with an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat exclusive to the top variant. Seat material ranges from premium fabric on mid variants to perforated leather, in black or camel tan, stitched with the Crysta insignia on the top.

On the tech side, infotainment is a capacitive touchscreen display, with Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on all variants except the base.

Higher up, this is accompanied by a TFT instrument cluster with expanded trip information including ECO scoring and audio/phone call display, along with automatic climate control, cruise control, a fold-down seat-back table, smart entry, and indirect blue ambient lighting.

Regardless of variant, all variants get a tilt-and-telescopic adjustable steering column.

exterior

The Crysta's proportions are unambiguously MPV, with an upright glasshouse, wide three-row body, and minimal tapering at the rear. The front fascia varies with variant, where lower variants get a black grille with multi-reflector headlamps, while higher ones upgrade to automatic LED projector headlamps with halogen and LED clearance lamps, and a more chrome-accented grille, and front fog lamps with chrome garnish.

Moving along the body, ORVMs (outer rear-view mirrors) gain auto-fold and welcome lights as variant rises, with the top receiving chrome-finished housings. Door handles go from body-coloured on lower variants to chrome starting from mid variant upward.

Lastly, wheels are 205/65 R16 steel units to alloys of the same size on most variants, with the top variant stepping up to larger 215/55 R17 alloys.

safety

In 2020, an Indonesian-built Toyota Innova 2.0S MT petrol earned a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating with 82.69 total points. Toyota confirmed the Indian-spec diesel Crysta shares the identical structure and restraint system, extending this 5-star rating to the entire range. The score breaks down into Adult Occupant Protection (33.05), Child Occupant Protection (42.17), and Safety Assist (11.00), with testers noting good frontal protection alongside a potential risk for chest and lower-leg injuries.

On the active safety front, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, and Hill Start Assist are standard across all variants of Innova Crysta. Airbag count ranges from 3 on lower variants (driver, passenger, driver's knee) to 7 on the top variants, which add front side and curtain shield airbags.

That said, there are gaps worth noting. Seatbelt reminders cover the driver and front passenger only, rear-row reminders are absent across the entire range.

And no ADAS features of any kind are offered on any variant, including AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking), Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, or Blind Spot Detection.

competition

Toyota’s Innova Hycross and Kia’s Carens Clavis stand out to be clear competitors to Innova Crysta in its segment.

Toyota Innova Hycross is the Crysta's most direct segment companion. It offers petrol and strong-hybrid powertrains, ADAS, ventilated front seats, ottoman-powered second-row seats, a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and a JBL sound system, features the Crysta doesn't match. The Crysta counters with its ladder-frame construction, diesel torque, and stronger appeal among fleet and highway buyers who prioritise durability over comfort features.

Kia Carens Clavis undercuts the Crysta considerably and offers Level 2 ADAS, multiple engine options including petrol and diesel, and segment-forward technology across a smaller but well-packaged cabin. The Crysta's 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating is a clear safety edge over the Carens' 3-star Global NCAP score, and its 2.4-litre diesel offers meaningfully more torque for full-load use.
