Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose Hyundai Venue?Why choose
- Sturdy build with fit and finish that reviewers consistently rate highly
- A wide powertrain spread that now includes the diesel automatic it previously lacked
- Typically cheaper than the equivalent Sonet
- A surround-view camera, twin-display setup, Bose audio, ventilated seats and rear sunshades on higher versions
- Hyundai's service network is denser than Kia's
- An N Line version exists for buyers wanting a firmer setup
Why not choose
- Effectively a four-seater in practice
- The equipment worth having sits only on the dearest version, including driver assistance and the larger screens
- Its turbo returns poor economy in heavy traffic
- Owners find its ride less well resolved than the Sonet's over undulations
- Light interior colours soil easily
- Misses auto wipers, steering reach adjustment and a full-size spare
Why Choose Kia Sonet?Why choose
- Its diesel automatic is the smoother of the two, using a torque-converter gearbox that owners rate highly
- Owners who compared both describe the Sonet's suspension as better tuned, with cats-eyes and undulations less noticeable
- Around 205mm of ground clearance
- Ventilated seats, a sunroof, cruise control, wireless charging and a Bose system are available
- Six airbags, stability control, hill assist and tyre-pressure monitoring on the top safety package
Why not choose
- Rear legroom is only adequate and the width limits it to four people
- Top versions cost more than the equivalent Venue
- Missing a split-folding rear seat, auto wipers, steering reach adjustment and a full-size spare on dearer versions
- The variant structure is confusing to work through
- Kia's service network is smaller than Hyundai's
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersHyundai Venue
The Venue undercuts its Kia cousin on price while offering broadly the same hardware, and it now has a diesel automatic of its own, which removes the one thing that used to send buyers to Kia showrooms. Its small turbo suits city driving but drinks heavily in stop-start traffic, so anyone with a long urban commute is better served by the diesel.
The frustration is that Hyundai reserves the equipment most buyers actually want for the dearest version, which pushes the price uncomfortably close to a Creta and undermines the value case that makes the Venue appealing.
Kia Sonet
The Sonet asks slightly more and repays it with a better-resolved ride and the smoother diesel automatic, both of which owners who cross-shopped the two mention repeatedly. If you want a compact SUV with a proper torque-converter automatic and real pulling power, that combination is the reason to walk into a Kia showroom.
The turbo-petrol is quicker but pairs with a dual-clutch carrying known reliability worries. Take your time with the range, since equipment is spread unevenly, and sit three adults across the back before deciding, because width rather than legroom is the limiting factor.
