Tighter emission norms and the wider shift toward downsized turbo engines mean many entry-level cars today rely on three-cylinder setups. These motors are efficient and often feel punchy at low speeds, thanks to their larger individual cylinders and strong torque delivery.

However, they can sound a bit coarse and transmit more vibration into the cabin, especially under acceleration or at higher revs. That slightly jittery character is something many buyers still notice in daily driving.

A four-cylinder engine, on the other hand, naturally feels more balanced. Power delivery is smoother, revs build more progressively and overall refinement is clearly better, particularly on long drives. Noise and vibrations are also better controlled, which adds to comfort over time.

With that in mind, here are some of the most affordable four-cylinder SUVs, hatchbacks, sedans and MPVs currently on sale.
