Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose Kia Sonet?Why choose
- Its diesel automatic uses a torque-converter gearbox that owners repeatedly describe as the smoothest in this class
- Both the turbo-petrol and the diesel deliver strong performance with good driveability
- Around 205mm of ground clearance with well-judged suspension tuning
- Ventilated seats, a sunroof, cruise control, wireless charging and a Bose system are available
- Six airbags, stability control, hill assist and tyre-pressure monitoring on the top safety package
- Better interior finish than the Nexon's
Why not choose
- Rear legroom is only adequate and the width makes it a four-seater in practice
- Top versions are expensive for the segment
- Missing a split-folding rear seat, auto wipers, steering reach adjustment and a full-size spare on dearer versions
- Its dual-clutch automatic carries the reliability questions common to that type in India
- The variant structure is genuinely hard to work through
Why Choose Tata Nexon?Why choose
- Top marks from both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP, with six airbags and stability control standard throughout
- Four fuel types on one nameplate, spanning turbo-petrol, diesel, CNG and electric
- 208mm of ground clearance, slightly more than the Sonet
- More rear-seat space than the Sonet, which struggles with three across
- A panoramic sunroof and JBL audio on higher versions
- Among India's best-selling SUVs, which keeps servicing and resale simple
Why not choose
- Panel fit and finish trails the Kia's noticeably
- The configuration count makes the range confusing
- Its CNG is detuned and manual only
- Owner accounts of Tata's after-sales quality vary considerably by dealer
- Its diesel automatic is not as polished as the Sonet's
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersKia Sonet
The Sonet's diesel automatic is the reason to shortlist it, and it remains one of the genuinely satisfying powertrains in this class, smooth in a way that most rivals with automated manuals cannot approach. If you want a compact SUV with a proper automatic and real pulling power, start there. The turbo-petrol is quicker but pairs with a dual-clutch that carries known reliability worries in Indian traffic conditions.
Take time with the range, because equipment is spread unevenly and the naming makes comparison harder than it should be. Sit three adults across the back before deciding, since width rather than legroom is what limits this car.
Tata Nexon
The Nexon's argument is breadth and tested safety, and both are strong. Its diesel is the choice for anyone regularly covering highway distance, with enough torque to make a loaded car feel unstrained.
The turbo-petrol with the dual-clutch handles daily driving with some enjoyment, while the CNG suits owners chasing the lowest running cost and the electric version works if you can charge at home. Mid-range versions offer the best balance of price and equipment, with the surround-view camera and panoramic sunroof higher up. Choose it over the Sonet when rear space, fuel flexibility and crash credentials outweigh interior polish.

Things We Like in Kia Sonet
- Six airbags are standard on every single variant, not just the top variants.
- The powertrain lineup of three engines and up to six transmissions is among the widest in the segment.
Things We Like in Tata Nexon
- Holds 5-star ratings from both Bharat NCAP (2024) and Global NCAP (2024), scoring 29.41/32 and 32.22/34 respectively for adult occupant protection.
- The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA) is a notably sophisticated transmission for this price band, featuring wet clutch technology with active cooling, machine learning adaptation, and a self-healing mechanism.
Things We Don't Like in Kia Sonet
- The Sonet hasn't been independently crash tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP.
- All-wheel disc brakes are offered on higher variants, while lower variants get rear drum brakes.
Things We Don't Like in Tata Nexon
- Knee airbags are not available on any variant, a gap that is flagged in the Bharat NCAP safety equipment listing.
- The CNG variant is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission system. No automatic option exists for buyers who want both CNG running costs and a gearbox-free driving experience.
