Mahindra Thar ROXX Overview

The Thar Roxx builds on the legacy of the original Thar by adding more space and comfort to the formula. It is designed for buyers who love the iconic design but need extra usability for family duties. Tested across city traffic, highways and broken roads, the AX7L diesel automatic feels more rounded than before. It aims to balance lifestyle appeal with genuine capability, offering both daily comfort and weekend off road confidence in one package.

Engine and Performance

Power comes from the 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine producing 172 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, paired with a six speed torque converter automatic. The engine feels refined with controlled noise levels and strong low end pull. It delivers smooth acceleration in city conditions and confident overtakes on highways. Fuel efficiency ranges between 10 to 12 kmpl in mixed use and can reach 15 kmpl on open highways.

Ride quality has improved over the three door model thanks to updated suspension tuning. Highway stability is impressive for a ladder frame SUV, though body roll is noticeable around corners. The steering feels stable at speed but heavy at low speeds. Off road capability remains a highlight with 4x4 hardware, low range and locking differential enabling it to tackle slush, inclines and rough trails confidently.

fuel economy

In real world conditions, the Thar Roxx delivers decent but not class leading fuel efficiency, especially in diesel form. In city traffic with frequent stop go movement, expect figures of around 9 to 11 kmpl depending on driving style. On open highways at steady speeds, it can return 13 to 15 kmpl, which feels reasonable for a ladder frame SUV of this size and weight. Hard acceleration, heavy loads or extended 4x4 usage will naturally bring the numbers down further.

interior

and door pads lift the overall feel, while lower sections use harder plastics that may show scratches over time. The front seats are ventilated, and the driver gets electric adjustment. Rear seat space is significantly improved, offering generous legroom and reclinable backrests, making it family friendly.

Boot space stands at around 447 litres and expands beyond 1000 litres with seats folded. Features include automatic climate control with rear vents, wireless charging, cooled glovebox, multiple USB ports and keyless entry. The 10.25 inch touchscreen supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, paired with a nine speaker Harman Kardon audio system. A matching digital driver display shows fuel data, tyre pressure and ADAS alerts. While the interface is generally responsive, occasional lags and minor glitches can appear.

exterior

The Thar Roxx retains its bold, boxy silhouette but stretches it with a longer wheelbase that gives it stronger road presence. The front features the signature seven slot grille, LED projector headlamps and a sturdy bumper with functional fog lamps and tow hooks. Flared wheel arches house 19 inch diamond cut alloy wheels wrapped in 255 section tyres, giving it a muscular stance.

At the rear, vertical LED tail lamps and a tailgate mounted spare wheel complete the tough look. With 219 mm of ground clearance and solid approach and departure angles, it handles rough terrain with ease. The larger dimensions, however, make tight parking and narrow lanes slightly challenging. Fit and finish feel durable, though some panel gaps could be better aligned.

safety

The Thar Roxx AX7L has secured a five star Bharat NCAP rating, reinforcing its strong structural safety. It comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and hill hold and descent control. The Level 2 ADAS suite includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and forward collision warning.

Additional safety features include blind spot monitoring, tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX mounts and a 360 degree camera with dynamic guidelines. Braking performance is reassuring with good stopping power, though pedal feel can require firmer input in wet conditions.

Rivals

competition

The Thar Roxx competes with models like the Mahindra Scorpio N, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Force Gurkha. While the Creta and Seltos offer better urban refinement and fuel efficiency, they lack true off road capability. The Gurkha matches it in rugged ability but falls short in features and comfort. The Scorpio N offers a strong alternative within Mahindra’s lineup for those wanting a more conventional SUV experience.

final verdict

personality. It offers strong diesel performance, genuine 4x4 capability, improved rear seat space and a feature rich cabin that makes daily driving far easier than the three door version. There are compromises in city fuel efficiency, body roll and minor infotainment glitches, but none are deal breakers. For buyers who want bold styling, real off road ability and added practicality in one package, the Thar Roxx makes solid sense.
