India’s electric passenger vehicle segment showed strong momentum in January 2026, recording total registrations of 10,907 units across these five brands. The numbers point to steady and maturing demand, especially when compared to January 2025, which was inflated by delayed registrations carried over from late 2024.
Tata Motors continued to dominate the space with a commanding share, while Mahindra’s sharp rise clearly reflects the impact of fresh and well-received model launches. Both Tata and Mahindra have several EV models lined up for near future

Tata Motors strengthened its unchallenged leadership with 7,075 registrations, up 40.5 percent from 5,037 units last year, supported by high-volume and relatively affordable offerings like the Nexon EV, Punch EV, and the newer Curvv EV.
Mahindra Electric delivered the biggest surprise of the month, jumping to 3,183 registrations from just 686 units, translating into a massive 364 percent year-on-year growth driven by strong interest in its new BE 6 and XEV 9e and 9s electric SUVs.
VinFast, following its late-2025 market entry, registered a respectable 416 units, signaling an early foothold in the Indian EV space. BYD slipped to 196 units as competition intensified in the premium electric segment, while Tesla India remained niche with 37 registrations, underlining the challenges of pricing and limited localisation.
Overall, the EV passenger vehicle segment continues to gain depth, supported by improving charging infrastructure, expanding model choices, and growing consumer confidence in electric mobility.
