Tata
Tata continues to dominate India’s EV space, opening 2026 with a strong 8,128 units in January before the typical post-festive dip to 5,616 in February. March saw a healthy recovery to 6,819 units, keeping them firmly in the lead with around 40-43% market share.
The Harrier EV is still pulling in strong numbers, while the Nexon EV and Punch EV remain consistent performers. With over 2.5 lakh cumulative EVs sold in India by late 2025, Tata is now gearing up for the much-awaited Sierra EV revival and more affordable models under ₹10 lakh.
MG (JSW MG Motor)
MG had a solid start with 6,116 units in January, dropped to 4,768 in February, and bounced back nicely to 5,624 in March. The Windsor EV remains one of the best-selling electric cars in the country, especially popular in non-metro cities where nearly 70% of its sales are coming from.
MG is pushing hard on volume with attractive pricing and is planning half a dozen new models (mostly EVs and PHEVs) over the next 18 months.
Mahindra
Mahindra showed impressive resilience, 3,599 units in January, a small dip to 3,044 in February, followed by a strong jump to 4,693 in March. The recently launched XEV 9S (their three-row electric SUV) has been a game-changer, even briefly becoming the top-selling EV in February.
Combined with the BE 6 and XEV 9e, Mahindra has already crossed 41,000 electric SUVs sold. Their Born Electric range is gaining real traction, and the company is scaling up production aggressively.

VinFast
VinFast sold 445 units in January, they held steady at 414 in February before jumping to 627 in March. In just a few months of 2026, they’ve already overtaken BYD in cumulative sales and climbed to 4th place among EV makers. Their aggressive expansion (now at 50 showrooms) and plans to launch five models by end of 2026, including the affordable VF3 and VF5, show they’re not here to play small.
BYD
BYD posted 233 units in January, then steadily climbed to 318 in February and 387 in March. While the volumes are still modest, they’re growing month-on-month in a tough market. As a premium-focused player, BYD is targeting double-digit growth for the full year 2026 after a strong 2025.
They’re expanding their dealership network (recently opened their 48th showroom) and evaluating local assembly options to beat high import duties.
Tesla
Tesla remains a tiny player in India with just 38 units in January, 29 in February, and 47 in March. These ultra-low volumes reflect the challenge of selling premium imported EVs in a price-sensitive market. The Model Y is still their main offering, with some reports of discounts being offered to clear inventory.
Musk also confirmed that Tesla will kil Model S and Model X to make for humanoid robots, putting the whole budget Tesla EV thing into question as to when and if it will arrive
