Next-Generation Toyota Fortuner Test Mule Spotted (updated)

The next-generation Toyota Fortuner has been spotted testing in Thailand for the first time, marking the start of a full model overhaul after nearly a decade of the current, second-generation model going on sale.

Recent spy shots show a heavily camouflaged prototype undergoing road trials.

The test mule reveals a slightly boxier and more upright silhouette with a flatter bonnet, wider stance, and muscular proportions that enhance its rugged appeal.

At the front, the design draws clear inspiration from the latest Hilux pickup. It features a large, upright grille, slimmer LED headlamps with high-mounted daytime running lights, a split headlamp layout where main units sit lower, and a sculpted bumper with integrated fog lamps.

The rear shows slim wraparound LED taillights, possibly joined by a connecting light bar, a redesigned tailgate, a revised bumper, and a gently sloping roofline.

These changes give the SUV a sharper, more modern look while keeping its commanding road presence.

Inside, the cabin should see major upgrades to address the current model's outdated feel.

(Update 27 Feb 2026)- This new test model reveals a lot about the upcoming Fortuner. Its more edgy and boxy with new blacked out top half. It looks almost done so expected some kind of official teaser soon An India launch is expected in 2027.

Expect more soft-touch plastics, a dual screen setup for the instrument cluster and infotainment, a larger touchscreen with better connectivity, over-the-air updates, ventilated and powered front seats, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, and the latest Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite with radar and cameras visible on the prototype.

The new Fortuner will use the upgraded Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) ladder-frame platform, shared with the new Hilux.

For India and key markets, powertrains are expected to include the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine (around 201 bhp and 500 Nm) and 2.7-litre petrol, both paired to manual and automatic options, with four-wheel drive on higher diesel variants.

A 48-volt mild-hybrid system on the diesel is likely to improve efficiency and performance.

Expect the third-generation Fortuner to have a global debut by mid-2026, with India launch likely by late 2026 or early 2027.

This generational update will strengthen its position in the full-size SUV segment against rivals like the new MG Majestor, offering improved tech, safety, and reliability.
