Why Are February car sales so low compared to January in 2026?

The dip in February 2026 car sales across India, compared to a blockbuster January, can be chalked up to a mix of seasonal and economic factors that often play out in the auto market. January saw a massive surge—over 4.5 lakh units industry-wide—thanks to lingering festive momentum from late 2025, GST rate cuts that made cars more affordable, pent-up demand from rural buyers boosted by good harvests, and incentives like income tax rebates sparking a buying frenzy.

Carmakers also pushed hard with year-start promotions, and many hiked prices in January to offset rising input costs like aluminum and copper, prompting buyers to rush purchases before hikes fully kicked in. Come February, things cooled off: it's historically a slower month with fewer selling days (28 vs. January's 31), post-budget uncertainty often stalls decisions as people wait for policy tweaks on taxes or subsidies, and the Union Budget's announcements can fluctuate sentiment.

Plus, with the financial year-end approaching in March, many hold off for bigger discounts or new fiscal benefits. Geopolitical tensions kept commodity prices volatile, squeezing margins and buyer confidence.
