Hyundai HE1i Electric Mini SUV Spied Testing

Hyundai is developing a new compact electric SUV for India. Codenamed HE1i, this model will likely be the Exter EV. Recent spy shots of test mules in South Korea show a heavily camouflaged prototype. The overall silhouette appears boxy and upright, with simple, straight lines. It measures under four meters in length and will likely be based on the E-GMP (K) platform shared with the global Hyundai Inster.
Detailed design elements remain hidden under camouflage. However, the front suggests a sealed grille typical for EVs. The side profile shows flared wheel arches and diamond-cut alloy wheels with a petal-like design. The roof rails, interestingly, seem functional. Hyundai could include interior elements from the Exter, such as a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other possible features are automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, and a sunroof.

Hyundai is expected to use locally sourced LFP batteries for this compact crossover to keep costs low. While further details are far from confirmed, expect two battery pack options for medium and long range.
Reports suggest this compact mini SUV could debut in late 2026 or early 2027. Hyundai will manufacture it at the Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu. This made-in-India EV might also see exports, enabled by the India-EU Free Trade Agreement signed in early 2026. With strong demand for compact EVs, the HE1i could strengthen Hyundai's position in the segment.
Prices are likely to be competitive against rivals like the upcoming Punch EV facelift to attract first-time EV buyers.
