Haryana Government Mandates EV Charging Stations in All New Buildings

The Haryana government has revised the Haryana Building Code 2017 to improve electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in newly constructed and renovated residential and commercial properties, greatly exhibiting the state’s readiness for EV adoption.

As per the norms, commercial as well as non residential buildings like malls, shopping complexes, hotels, and office spaces with parking lots with a minimum of 10 cars should at least have one EV charging spot for every three parking slots.

For residential projects, such as group housing societies, cooperative housing initiatives, and residential complexes overseen by resident welfare associations (RWAs), the government has required a minimum of one EV charging station for every five parking spaces. These initiatives should also be completely equipped for EV use, with charging pathways conduits throughout the development.

According to the amendment released by the Town and Country Planning Department on June 5, 2026, EV charging infrastructure will not be included in the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) calculation, to motivate developers to establish the charging facilities without affecting project finances.

Most significantly, the modification also pertains to current residential structures. Flat owners wanting to set up EV charging stations in their designated parking spots are permitted to proceed, as long as the installations meet established electrical and fire safety standards and obtain certification from both the fire department and the relevant power distribution company.

This major development comes as various states across India aim to ramp up EV adoption by providing sufficient charging facilities.
