Thanks to the latest GST reforms, entry-level cars have become more affordable than before. Here is a look at every car you can buy in India for under ₹5 lakh on road.
We have taken on road costs because ex-showroom prices do not reflect the true cost of a car. They exclude mandatory expenses like registration, road tax, insurance, and other charges, which significantly increase the final amount a buyer actually pays.
That said, it is important to highlight a major concern. Despite packing airbags and other safety features, a few of these cars under 5 lakhs are among the most unsafe in their segment. Safety should always be the number one priority when buying a car, regardless of budget.
If you are looking for a low-cost secondary car or something purely for short city commutes, we strongly recommend considering a used Tata Tiago on sites like Spinny or Cars24. The Tiago comes with a 4-star Global NCAP safety rating, and a well-maintained model could be yours for around ₹4 lakhs, as a new one will cost you over ₹5 lakhs on road.
You can also stretch your budget for a new Punch facelift, which retails at around ₹6.1 lakh on road. Your safety as a driver matters more than anything else, and the Punch remains the most affordable car in India with a full 5-star safety rating.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso VXi (O) ₹4.79 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso stands out as a compact hatchback with a mini-SUV look and a 180 mm ground clearance, making it great for city roads and light rough paths. Its upright design gives it a bold presence, while the compact dimensions help with easy parking in most tight spots.
Inside, it has space for four adults and a useful 240-litre boot for daily needs. The cabin uses simple materials and fabric seats but feels airy. Key features include a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted controls, power windows, and keyless entry.
The S-Presso uses Maruti’s popular and peppy 1.0-litre (K10) petrol engine, making 68 bhp and 91 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It returns a real-world mileage of around 20-22 km/l.
Safety includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders and speed alert warning.
The S-Presso VXi (O) costs ₹4.79 lakh on-road in Delhi.
Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 VXi (O) ₹5.01 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is a simple hatchback that shines in fuel savings and ease of use, ideal for first-time buyers or city runs. It has a compact body with a slightly tall-boy design with clean lines, making it nimble in tight spaces.
The interior fits four adults with basic comfort, though rear space is snug. Features include a seven-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering audio controls, and USB ports.
It shares its 1.0-litre K10 petrol engine with the S-Presso, delivering an identical 68 bhp and 91 Nm. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 24.39 km/l mileage.
In terms of safety, it packs six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders, and speed-sensitive auto door locks.
Though marginally over the budget with an on-road price of ₹5.01 lakh, the additional safety features make it a better option than the S-Presso.
Renault Kwid Authentic MT ₹4.79 lakh

The Renault Kwid brings crossover-like styling to the entry-level segment, with rugged looks that appeal to young drivers, thanks to its squared-off lamps, black bumpers, and 184 mm ground clearance. It handles city potholes well and provides decent room and comfort for four people.
Its cabin has a modern touch despite fabric seats and basic hard plastics. It features a digital cluster, steering-mounted audio controls, USB ports, and manual AC.
The Kwid is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 67 bhp and 91 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It achieves a maximum mileage of over 20 km/l. Its lightweight body makes it fun to zip around in city traffic.
Safety equipment covers dual airbags, ABS with EBD, driver and co-driver seatbelt reminders, and speed alerts.
The Authentic MT is the entry-level Kwid variant, costing ₹4.79 lakh on-road.

Honourable Mentions
If you can stretch your budget slightly over ₹5 lakh, consider these options for better overall quality and space.
Tata Tiago XE ₹5.15 lakh

The Tata Tiago is a solid compact hatchback with modern styling and a punchy drive, suitable for highways and cities. It has balanced proportions and an airy cabin that feels premium for the price.
Comfort comes from flat ride quality and supportive seats. It gets a basic interior with good visibility and light controls.
Powertrain uses a 1199 cc petrol engine producing 85 bhp and 113 Nm, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Safety stands out with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, ISOFIX points, and a four-star Global NCAP rating.
The Tiago XE costs ₹5.15 lakh on-road in Delhi.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio LXi ₹5.22 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio LXi offers zippy city performance in a compact package, with high efficiency and practical space. Its friendly design and spacious boot make it versatile for families.
It gets a basic music system with steering-mounted controls.
Just like the S-Presso and Alto K10, the Celerio also uses the 1.0-litre petrol engine delivering 66 bhp and 89 Nm, with a five-speed manual.
Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-hold, rear parking sensors, and speed alerts.
The Celerio is the most expensive hatchback here, with an on-road price of ₹5.22 lakh.
While all these cars are good picks in this budget, it is important to note that they are not very high on safety, despite all the active and passive safety features. We recommend stretching your budget further for the Tata Punch, which recently received a facelift and is one of the safest cars in India, priced from ₹5.60 lakh ex-showroom (around ₹6.25 lakh on-road).
