What to Expect from Hyundai's Bayon-Based Compact SUV?

Hyundai is planning to introduce a new compact SUV in India to compete in the crowded sub-4 meter segment.

Codenamed the Bc4i, this new model will be based on the Hyundai Bayon crossover, which was introduced in global markets in 2021. With this model, Hyundai aims to bridge the gap between the Venue and the Creta in its lineup. It has been previously spotted testing abroad.

While the global-spec Bayon is more of a low-slung crossover, the India-bound derivative could have a more SUV-like stance. Measuring just over 4 metres long, it will be positioned slightly below the Creta.

Just like all other Hyundais, expect a premium-looking dashboard with a feature-loaded cabin. Safety might cover multiple airbags and Level 2 ADAS.

The SUV is likely to borrow the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine from the Creta, along with a CNG option for higher mileage seekers.

Since Hyundai offers multiple engine options on its premium offerings, we expect a turbo petrol option as well, likely a smaller 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre unit to keep costs lower than the Creta.

Transmission choices could include a 6-speed manual and a CVT, with a possible DCT for the turbo petrol variants.

While a launch timeline is still unknown, prices are expected to range from ₹10 lakh, going up to ₹19 lakh (ex-showroom) - noticeably lower than the Creta.

The Hyundai Bayon will rival other compact SUVs like the Maruti Victoris, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, Tata Sierra, and Kia Seltos.
