Bulletproof (armoured) cars in India serve high-profile individuals who seek maximum security amid rising threats.
Factory-built models come pre-certified from global manufacturers. They offer seamless integration, superior engineering, and full warranties. These vehicles meet strict VPAM/VR standards (European ballistic resistance) and require Indian approvals from the police, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and ARAI testing.
Custom conversions provide more affordable alternatives but lack the precision of factory integration. Prices include heavy import duties, and annual inspections are mandatory.
Below is a detailed look at the factory-built options available in India.
| Model | Protection Level | Approx. Price (₹ crore, est. on-road) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mercedes-Benz S 680 Guard | VR10 VPAM | 12 - 15 |
| Mercedes-Maybach S680 Guard | VR10 | 15+ |
| BMW 7 Series Protection | VR9 (glass VPAM 10) | 10 - 16 |
| Audi A8 L Security | VR9 body / VR10 glass | 12 - 15 |
| Range Rover Sentinel | VR8 | 8 - 10 |
Factory-Built Armoured Luxury Vehicles
2026 Mercedes-Benz S 680 Guard

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S680 Guard 4MATIC is the definitive armored luxury sedan, certified with VPAM VR10 ballistic protection—the highest level for civilian vehicles. It is designed to withstand armor-piercing rounds and explosive blasts, utilizing a reinforced shell and 10cm-thick multi-layered polycarbonate glass. Powered by a 6.0L V12 biturbo engine, it effectively manages its 4.5-ton weight while maintaining a top speed of 190 km/h.
Essential survival features include an emergency fresh-air system for gas attacks, built-in fire extinguishers, and PAX run-flat tires.
To acquire one in India, buyers must contact the Mercedes-Benz India Specialty Sales division or a flagship dealer for a bespoke order. Since it is a Completely Built Unit (CBU), the likely price in India is between ₹12 crore and ₹15 crore (ex-showroom), factoring in the base cost, heavy armoring, and significant import duties.

Mercedes-Maybach S680 Guard

The ultra-luxury variant of the S 680 Guard elevates opulence while matching VR10 protection.
It includes the same armoured passenger cell, VR10 glass and body, explosive and blast shields, self-sealing systems, fire extinguishers, emergency oxygen, and run-flat capability.
Maybach-specific interiors remain intact with added discreet armour.
It shares the identical 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 (603 - 612 hp, 830 Nm) with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, handling the heavy weight efficiently for VIP transport. In India, this commands the highest premiums among sedans.
BMW 7 Series Protection (760i xDrive VR9)

BMW’s 7 Series Protection uses innovative Protection Core architecture, a 10 mm steel base with added ballistic panels and glass (VPAM 10 rating).
It resists high-velocity rifles, sniper rounds, and multiple hand grenade blasts (underbody and roof). The armoured cell integrates seamlessly with luxury features and includes advanced escape mechanisms.
Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 delivers 530 hp and 750 Nm of torque to all four wheels via xDrive, achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and a 210 km/h top speed. This is impressive for its class despite a construction that is approximately 200 kg lighter than predecessors.
Audi A8 L Security

The Audi A8 L Security boasts a fully fortified passenger cell to VR9 standards and VR10-rated multi-layer glass.
Additional features include a self-sealing fuel tank, PAX run-flat tyres (can be driven up to 80 km at 80 km/h after a puncture), automatic fire extinguishers, emergency oxygen supply, and reinforced structure. The Quattro all-wheel drive ensures stability.
Under the bonnet sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 563–571 hp and 800 Nm of torque, enabling 0-100 km/h in approximately 6.3 seconds despite a weight of around 4.5 tonnes.

Range Rover Sentinel

The Range Rover Sentinel delivers VR8 protection with a full ballistic armour, 15 kg TNT blast resistance, and DM51 grenade defence from all angles, including the roof and floor.
Its armoured glass, escape systems, and off-road capability remain intact for versatile use.
This Sentinel is powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8, producing approximately 380 hp, paired with an 8-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive. It does 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 10.4 seconds, with a top speed of nearly 193 km/h.
Popular Custom-Armoured Vehicles
While factory models offer integrated excellence, custom armouring dominates India due to affordability and local service.
Certified firms (for example, JCBL, Big Toy, Shield) convert robust chassis such as the Toyota Fortuner (BR4 - VR7, ₹1 - 1.5 crore), Toyota Land Cruiser (VR7 - VR9, ₹2.5 - 4 crore), Lexus LX, Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Scorpio, Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Ford Endeavour.
These use ballistic steel, multi-layer glass, and upgraded suspension and brakes.
Toyota models lead in reliability. Protection is customised (handgun to rifle levels) with full regulatory support. Costs are lower, but build quality varies compared with factory integration.
| Model | Protection Level | Approx. Price (₹ crore, est. on-road) |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Fortuner | BR4 - VR7 | 1 - 1.5 |
| Toyota Land Cruiser | VR7 - VR9 | 2.5 - 4 |
| Lexus LX | VR7- VR9 | 3.5 - 5 |
| Toyota Innova Crysta | BR4 - BR6 | 80 lakh - 1.2 |
| Mahindra Scorpio | NIJ III / VR7 | 70 lakh - 1.2 |
| Audi Q7 | BR6 | 85 lakh - 1.2 |
| BMW X5 | BR6 | 85 lakh - 1.2 |
| Ford Endeavour | BR4 - VR7 | 1 - 1.5 |
| Jaguar XJ | BR4- VR7 | 5 - 6 |
Ballistic Protection Levels Explained in Simple Terms
Think of ballistic protection levels like safety ratings for armoured vehicles. They tell you exactly what kind of bullets or threats the protection can stop without letting them pass through.
Higher numbers generally mean stronger protection against more powerful weapons, but also more weight and cost.
There are three main systems used around the world (and in India for bulletproof cars).
BR Levels (also called B or FB levels)
This is the older European standard (CEN EN 1063), very common for custom-armoured cars in India.
BR4 offers good protection against basic street-level threats such as pistols and revolvers.
BR6 stops powerful rifle bullets and often AK-47 rounds, too. This is a popular level for many civilian SUVs in India.
BR7 stops even tougher armour-piercing rifle rounds. This is the highest common level for very serious threats.
VR Levels (VPAM VR standard from Germany)
This is a stricter, modern European standard used mostly for factory-built luxury armoured cars (like Mercedes S-Guard or Range Rover Sentinel). It tests the entire vehicle (not just flat plates), including doors, glass edges, roof, floor, and weak spots.
VR6 and VR7 stop AK-47 bullets and standard rifle rounds. VR7 is tougher because of extra strict testing. Both are very common for high-end protection.
VR8 is better suited against certain high-velocity threats.
VR9 stops armour-piercing versions of rifle rounds, like special military bullets.
VR10 is the highest civilian level, stopping the most powerful armour-piercing rifles plus grenades, blasts, and explosives. Only top luxury models are equipped with this.
NIJ Levels (from the USA – National Institute of Justice)
This is mainly for body armour, but sometimes referenced for vehicles in India.
Level IIIA stops high-speed handguns.
Level III stops standard rifle rounds like AK-47 bullets.
Level IV stops armour-piercing rifle rounds.
In India, most factory luxury cars use VR8 to VR10 for the best all-round safety, while custom armoured vehicles often use BR4–BR7 or equivalent VR levels to balance cost, weight, and protection.

May 17, 2026I am looking to buy a Armored Toyota Land Cruiser I want to let you know the estimate cost , delivery time frame and legal terms and conditions for purchase the vehicle
Team CARHP
Hi Vinoth, Private ownership of an armored Toyota Land Cruiser is legal, but buyers must obtain police verification, RTO approval, RC endorsement mentioning armoring, and ballistic certification from an approved armoring company. Higher B6/B7 protection levels may also require Ministry of Home Affairs clearance. Imported armored vehicles must comply with AIS-194:2022 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules. Expect price to bea round 1.5 to 2 cr depending on your exact needs, maybe even more
