2026 Toyota Hilux: 5 Features That Make the 9th-Gen Pickup a Big Deal

Toyota India has launched the ninth-generation Hilux at prices ranging from ₹31.99 lakh (GX 4x2 AT) to ₹36.69 lakh (VX 4x4 AT) ex-showroom. The older model had a strong mechanical case but was let down by an ageing cabin and a feature list that felt thin for its price.

The new one addresses most of that. It's a proper generational leap in design, cabin quality, safety, and powertrain options. Here's what to actually look forward to.

1. Land Cruiser-Inspired Interior With a 12.3-Inch Screen and Physical Controls

The old Hilux's cabin was functional but had no personality. The 9th-gen fixes that completely. Toyota has borrowed the interior direction from the new Land Cruiser, giving the Hilux a layered dashboard, a floating 12.3-inch touchscreen, a matching 12.3-inch digital driver display, and a new 3-spoke steering wheel. 

What's worth noting is that Toyota has kept physical controls for climate, drive modes, and terrain select, so you're not hunting through menus in the middle of a trail or a highway merge. The centre console groups all 4WD controls in one place, which is a practical upgrade over the scattered layout of the outgoing model. Ventilated front seats, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, and rear USB-C ports round out the comfort additions.

2. 48V Mild Hybrid on the 2.8-Litre Diesel

The numbers stay familiar: 204 hp and 500 Nm from the same 2.8-litre turbodiesel paired with a 6-speed automatic. But the 9th-gen globally adds a 48V mild hybrid system that works with the diesel to smooth out throttle response, improve low-speed refinement, and cut fuel consumption. In the Hilux's global spec, the 48V motor-generator is mounted high on the engine, which means wading depth stays at 700 mm unchanged. 

The 48V battery sits under the rear seats, so there's no hit to cargo space. Toyota India hasn't confirmed whether India gets the mild hybrid or the standard diesel. Given that the Fortuner already got the 48V Neo Drive system, this pickup on the same IMV platform is a logical next step. Expect confirmation at the launch.

3. Multi-Terrain Select With 5 Off-Road Modes

The Hilux was always capable off-road, but the new generation formalises that capability with a proper Multi-Terrain Select system offering up to 5 modes: rock, sand, mud, dirt, and deep snow. A Multi-Terrain Monitor gives you a ground-level camera view of what's under the chassis, and a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor handles parking and slow-speed positioning. 

Ground clearance on the Hybrid 48V variant stands at 309 mm globally, wading depth stays at 700 mm, approach angle is 29 degrees, and wheel articulation is 500 mm. These aren't estimated numbers, they're from Toyota's official release for the new gen.

4. Electric Power Steering For the First Time

This sounds like a small update but it matters quite a bit if you've driven the old Hilux. Hydraulic steering on a body-on-frame pickup at low speeds is heavy and communicates every trail irregularity straight to your hands. 

The 9th-gen Hilux is the first in the nameplate's history to get Electric Power Steering. EPS reduces steering effort at low speed, improves manoeuvrability, and critically reduces kickback when the front wheels hit rocks or uneven terrain during off-road driving. It also allows for better ADAS integration, which connects directly to the next point.

5. Expanded Toyota T-Mate Safety Suite With ADAS

The current Hilux has limited safety tech. The 9th-gen brings Toyota's T-Mate safety package with a significantly extended list: Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Monitor Camera, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Emergency Driving Stop System.

 New additions at the system level include Proactive Driving Assist and Low Speed Acceleration Suppression. The system also supports over-the-air updates, meaning safety features can be improved post-purchase without a service visit. India-specific ADAS calibration may mean not every function ships on day one, but the hardware foundation is now in place.

The pickup is scheduled to be launched on July 28, 2026, with customer bookings expected to begin shortly after the official price announcement through Toyota dealerships. 

Prices are expected to start at around ₹35 lakh (ex-showroom), making it around ₹1 lakh costlier than the outgoing model due to its updated design, new features, and improved technology
