Smart Summary for Car Selection
Why Choose Mahindra Scorpio N?Why choose
- Genuine four-wheel-drive hardware with a rear locking differential, which the Safari cannot offer at any price
- A 2.0 turbo-petrol of around 200hp, stronger than anything in the Safari lineup
- Body-on-frame construction that tolerates abuse and bad roads better than a monocoque
- Seven seats included from the entry version
- Simpler mechanicals usually translate to lower long-term running costs
- Penta-link rear suspension makes it more settled than most ladder-frame rivals
Why not choose
- The second row is fixed and the third does not split, leaving the cabin inflexible
- Third-row legroom is tight, with no air-con vents back there and negligible boot space when full
- Four-wheel drive is diesel only
- Six airbags and driver assistance are both concentrated near the top of the range
- Its entry versions use a weaker diesel tune
- Fuel consumption is heavy by modern standards
Why Choose Tata Safari?Why choose
- Rides and handles more like a car thanks to its monocoque construction
- Captain-chair layouts make its second row far more comfortable than the Scorpio N's fixed bench
- 5-star results from both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP
- Driver assistance, JBL audio and ventilated seats reach further down its range
- Rear air-con vents throughout, including the third row
- A choice of the 2.0 diesel or the newer turbo-petrol
Why not choose
- No four-wheel drive, so it is a road SUV first and last
- Its length makes parking and low-speed manoeuvring harder
- Boot space with all three rows occupied is minimal
- Tata's after-sales quality varies considerably by dealer according to owners
- No petrol engine as powerful as the Scorpio N's turbo
Our Recommendation For Most BuyersMahindra Scorpio N
The Scorpio N suits buyers who want an SUV that can actually leave the tarmac, and its four-wheel-drive system with a locking differential is real hardware rather than the electronic approximations most rivals fit. That system is diesel only, so wanting capability settles your engine choice immediately. Petrol buyers should understand they are purchasing presence and pace instead of off-road ability, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to want.
Seek out the stronger diesel tune rather than the detuned entry engine, because the two feel like different vehicles. Mid-range versions represent the best value and are where the car starts feeling modern, though safety equipment being concentrated near the top of the range is worth factoring into your budget.
Tata Safari
The Safari is the more comfortable vehicle for families who live on sealed roads, and its monocoque construction shows up as composure on long highway journeys that the Scorpio N cannot match however well its suspension is tuned. Its diesel automatic is the combination that fits how seven-seaters actually get used, with enough torque to move a full car without effort, while the turbo-petrol suits owners who mostly drive in town and never wanted diesel.
Think harder about layout than about engine, because the six-seat configuration with captain chairs makes the middle row the best place in the vehicle. Tata also spreads its driver-assistance and comfort equipment further down the range than Mahindra does, which matters on a mid-range budget.
