Ampere Electric Magnus EX

The Ampere Magnus EX is powered by a hub-mounted BLDC (Brushless DC) motor with a continuous power rating of 1.2 kW and a peak output of 2.1 kW. This motor is paired with a 60V, 38.25 Ah lithium-ion battery, which translates to a total capacity of approximately 2.29 kWh. On paper, the ARAI-certified range is 121 km per charge, a figure achieved under ideal test conditions. In real-world urban environments, a more realistic expectation is between 75 and 85 km, depending heavily on payload, riding mode, and terrain. 

The scooter offers two riding modes: Eco and Power. In Eco mode, acceleration is muted and the top speed is restricted to around 30-35 km/h to maximise range. The Power mode unlocks the scooter's full potential, allowing it to reach a top speed of approximately 50-53 km/h. Throttle response is linear and predictable, avoiding the jerky initial pickup seen in some competitors. This performance envelope is adequate strictly for city commuting; the Magnus EX feels comfortable keeping pace with traffic up to 45 km/h, but it is not engineered for sustained runs on arterial roads or highways where higher speeds are necessary.

Comfort is a significant strength of the Ampere Magnus EX. It features a long, wide, and generously cushioned seat that provides excellent support for both the rider and a pillion over short-to-medium distances. The riding posture is upright and relaxed, with a spacious, flat floorboard that offers ample legroom for riders of varying heights. The low seat height of 770mm makes it easily accessible and manageable for a wide range of users, including shorter riders. For the pillion, comfort is further enhanced by well-positioned footpegs and a sturdy, easy-to-reach grab rail. In terms of practicality, the scooter offers a respectable 22 litres of under-seat storage. While this space is sufficient for a half-face helmet, groceries, or a small backpack, it may not accommodate a modern full-face helmet.

As an electric vehicle, it offers a distinct comfort advantage in stop-and-go traffic by producing no vibrations or engine heat, significantly reducing rider fatigue during long commutes in warm weather.

The Magnus EX is built on a conventional underbone frame, suspended by a telescopic fork at the front and twin coil-spring shock absorbers at the rear. This suspension setup is tuned for comfort, prioritising ride quality over sharp handling dynamics. It effectively absorbs minor road imperfections and speed bumps typical of Indian city streets, providing a compliant ride. With a low kerb weight of 94 kg and a compact wheelbase, the scooter is exceptionally agile. Navigating dense traffic, filtering through gaps, and executing tight U-turns is effortless.

 However, this lightweight nature, combined with its 10-inch wheels, means high-speed stability is not its forte; it can feel somewhat unsettled above 45 km/h, especially on uneven surfaces. Braking duties are managed by 130mm drum brakes on both the front and rear wheels, linked by a Combi-Braking System (CBS) as per regulatory requirements. For its sub-55 km/h top speed, the braking performance is adequate for planned stops. However, the absence of a front disc brake is a noticeable omission. In panic-braking situations, the drum brakes lack the initial bite and progressive feel of a disc setup, requiring a more forceful lever pull.

In terms of design, the Magnus EX adopts a conservative and familiar aesthetic that closely mimics traditional petrol-powered family scooters. It forgoes futuristic or aggressive styling in favour of a functional, non-polarising look. The front apron houses a bright LED headlamp, offering good illumination and visibility, while the tail lamp and indicators are conventional bulb units. A key highlight is the fully digital LCD instrument cluster, which provides essential information such as speed, battery charge level, odometer, trip meter, and selected ride mode. The display is legible under most lighting conditions but lacks the modern flair or connectivity features of more expensive rivals. T

The most significant of these is the removable battery pack, a critical advantage for users living in apartments who cannot install a private charging point. Other useful additions include a USB charging port located in the front glovebox for charging devices on the move, an under-seat light for better visibility in the dark, and a side-stand sensor that prevents the motor from engaging when the stand is down. Keyless entry is also provided, adding a layer of convenience.

The safety suite on the Ampere Magnus EX is functional but basic, meeting the minimum regulatory standards for its category. The primary active safety feature is the Combi-Braking System (CBS), which mechanically links the front and rear brakes. When the rear brake lever is applied, the system automatically engages a portion of the front brake, helping to balance the scooter and reduce stopping distances, especially for novice riders. However, the reliance on 130mm drum brakes at both ends is a point of concern when compared to competitors. While adequate for the scooter’s limited top speed, a front disc brake would provide superior braking power, better heat dissipation, and more consistent performance, particularly in wet conditions. 

The scooter is equipped with a mandatory side-stand cutoff sensor, a crucial feature that prevents accidental throttle engagement. Visibility is addressed by a bright LED headlamp, which enhances the rider's presence on the road at night and provides a better field of vision. The lack of more advanced systems like ABS or traction control is expected at this price point, but the absence of a disc brake option positions it a step behind several key rivals in the safety department.

Ola S1 X:

Positioned as a direct competitor, the Ola S1 X (in its 2kWh or 3kWh variants) offers a more modern package with a higher top speed of 85-90 km/h, a minimalist design, and access to Ola’s MoveOS software ecosystem. Its key differentiator is superior performance and tech integration. However, its battery is fixed, making it impractical for users without dedicated parking with a charging point.

TVS iQube (Base Variant):

The TVS iQube brings the trust and engineering prowess of an established manufacturer. Its standout differentiator is superior build quality, fit-and-finish, and ride refinement. The suspension feels more sophisticated, and the overall product feels more durable. The trade-offs are typically a higher initial purchase price and, similar to the Ola, a non-removable battery.

Hero Electric Optima CX:

As one of the pioneers in the Indian EV space, the Hero Electric Optima CX is a like-for-like rival. It also focuses on practicality with a removable battery option and a similar performance envelope. Its key differentiator is Hero Electric’s expansive sales and service network, which can be a significant advantage in tier-2 and tier-3 cities where Ampere’s presence might be limited.

Who should buy it?

Ideal for city commuters living in apartments or high-rises, where its removable battery is a primary decision-making factor.
