The AMO Electric Jaunty Plus is a city-focused electric scooter on sale in India, positioning itself as a practical alternative for daily urban commutes. Its primary strength lies in its balanced proposition of a claimed 120+ km range and a functional feature set, including a removable battery. However, it operates in a crowded market segment, facing direct competition from established players like the Hero Electric Optima CX and performance-oriented options such as the Okinawa PraisePro. A thorough analysis of its capabilities is essential before making a purchase decision.

Engine, Performance and Mileage

The AMO Jaunty Plus is powered by a 1.265 kW Brushless DC (BLDC) hub motor, paired with a 60V/40Ah removable lithium-ion battery pack. This powertrain configuration is engineered specifically for low-stress urban environments. The scooter's performance is not about outright acceleration but rather about delivering usable torque for city traffic. Throttle response is linear and predictable, avoiding the jerky initial pickup seen in some competitors, which makes it accessible for new riders. Its electronically limited top speed of approximately 50 km/h is adequate for navigating dense city streets but positions it firmly out of contention for any semi-urban or highway use.

The manufacturer claims a range of over 120 km on a single charge. This figure is achievable only under ideal conditions, likely in the most restrictive riding mode with a light payload. A more realistic real-world range for a mixed-use city commute would be closer to 85-95 km, which is still a respectable figure for its intended purpose. The 3-5 hour charging time for the removable battery adds a layer of convenience, allowing users to charge the pack at their home or office without needing a dedicated parking spot with a charging point.

posture comfort

For a scooter designed for daily commuting, ergonomics and practicality are paramount. The AMO Jaunty Plus features a long, single-piece seat that is well-cushioned and provides adequate support for both the rider and a pillion over short distances. The seat height is accessible for a wide range of riders, and the upright riding posture with a flat, spacious floorboard ensures a comfortable commute without straining the rider's back or legs. The generous floorboard space is also practical for carrying groceries or a backpack.

Pillion comfort is decent, with well-positioned footpegs and a sturdy grab rail. Underseat storage is a critical aspect for any scooter, and the Jaunty Plus offers a moderate amount of space, sufficient for a small helmet or a few personal items. The key practicality highlight, however, remains its removable battery pack. This feature single-handedly addresses the "parking-to-charge" problem faced by many apartment dwellers in India, allowing them to carry the battery indoors for charging. This flexibility significantly enhances the scooter's usability and makes it a viable option for a larger pool of potential buyers who lack dedicated charging infrastructure.

handling ride quality

The Jaunty Plus is built on a conventional underbone frame, supported by a telescopic fork at the front and spring-loaded gas-charged shock absorbers at the rear. This suspension setup is standard for the segment and offers a ride quality that prioritizes comfort over dynamic handling. Over broken tarmac and minor potholes, the suspension manages to absorb imperfections reasonably well, preventing significant jolts from reaching the rider. However, sharp-edged bumps can unsettle the scooter, a characteristic common among lightweight electric two-wheelers. In terms of handling, its low kerb weight of around 110 kg and compact dimensions make it exceptionally agile in congested traffic.

Filtering through gaps and executing tight U-turns is effortless. Stability at its top speed of 50 km/h is acceptable on well-paved roads, but crosswinds can be felt. The braking system comprises a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear, linked by an Electronic-Assisted Braking System (E-ABS), which is essentially a form of regenerative braking combined with a combi-brake system (CBS). Braking feel is progressive, and the setup provides sufficient stopping power for city speeds, though it lacks the outright bite and feedback of a true dual-disc configuration.

Design

The design of the AMO Jaunty Plus is conservative and functional, clearly aimed at a wide demographic. It adopts a familiar, non-polarizing scooter aesthetic with a large front apron housing an LED headlamp and integrated indicators. The overall build quality and panel fitment are acceptable for its price point. The scooter comes equipped with a fully digital instrument cluster that provides essential information like speed, battery level, trip meter, and odometer. While the display is legible in most conditions, direct sunlight can cause some glare.

In terms of practical features, the Jaunty Plus is well-equipped for a daily commuter. It includes a USB charging port located conveniently near the handlebar, an anti-theft alarm for security, and a side-stand sensor that prevents the motor from engaging when the stand is down. The inclusion of cruise control is a notable feature in this segment, allowing the rider to maintain a constant speed on open stretches of road, which can reduce rider fatigue. The LED lighting package, including the headlamp and tail lamp, improves visibility and energy efficiency. These features combine to offer a functional and user-friendly experience that aligns with the scooter's role as an urban mobility tool.

safety

The safety suite on the AMO Jaunty Plus is aligned with the norms for electric scooters in its performance category. The primary active safety feature is the braking system, which combines a front disc and a rear drum. This is augmented by a Combi-Braking System (CBS), mandated for two-wheelers below 125cc (or equivalent electric power), which links the front and rear brakes to ensure balanced braking force distribution when the rear brake lever is applied. AMO also markets an "E-ABS" system; however, it's crucial for buyers to understand this is not a traditional Anti-lock Braking System.

It is a regenerative braking mechanism that helps slow the scooter while recuperating energy and works in conjunction with the CBS. In practice, the braking setup offers confident stops in dry conditions. During wet weather, riders must be more cautious, as the absence of true ABS means the wheels can lock up under hard or emergency braking. Visibility is enhanced by the full-LED lighting, which makes the scooter more conspicuous to other road users, particularly at dawn, dusk, and nighttime. The mandatory side-stand cut-off sensor is another important safety feature that prevents accidental acceleration while parked.

competition

The city-speed electric scooter segment is fiercely competitive, and the Jaunty Plus faces several established rivals.

Hero Electric Optima CX (Dual Battery):

As a product from India's largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer by volume, the Optima's biggest differentiator is brand trust and a vast service network. It offers a slightly higher claimed range of around 140 km but with a lower top speed of 45 km/h, making it strictly a low-speed commuter.

Okinawa PraisePro :

The PraisePro targets buyers seeking more performance. It boasts a higher top speed of around 58 km/h and features like keyless entry. Its differentiator is superior performance, offering quicker acceleration and the ability to keep up with faster-moving traffic, though its real-world range is typically lower than the Jaunty Plus.

Ampere Magnus EX:

This scooter from Greaves Electric Mobility focuses on a strong value proposition. It offers a comparable ARAI-certified range of 121 km and a top speed of around 50 km/h. Its key differentiator is often its competitive pricing and robust build, making it a pragmatic choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliability.

buying advice

Who should buy it?

The Jaunty Plus is ideal for urban commuters seeking a no-fuss electric scooter for short-to-medium distance travel (15-40 km daily). Its removable battery and practical features make it an excellent choice for apartment dwellers or first-time EV buyers prioritising convenience and range over high performance.

Who should skip it?

Riders requiring a top speed of over 60 km/h for use on arterial roads or ring roads should look elsewhere. Those who prioritise an established, pan-India service network or advanced safety features like true ABS will find more suitable, albeit more expensive, options from legacy manufacturers.
