Yamaha is expected to launch its new supersport motorcycle, the R2, in India, having trademarked the YZF-R2 name in December 2025.
This model will sit above the popular R15 and target the 200cc segment. It is expected to launch by mid-2026 or during the festive season, with production in India and possible exports to other markets. The bike aims to attract young riders seeking more power and features at an affordable price.
Yamaha R2 Design and Features
The Yamaha R2 is likely to borrow styling cues from the R15, sporting a full-faired body, sharp lines, and an aerodynamic shape. It may include LED headlights, a larger windshield, and sporty graphics.
Expect a suspension setup with upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock for better handling. Brakes could feature dual discs with dual-channel ABS. An advanced digital instrument cluster could be offered, with a variety of information, along with smartphone connectivity.
Other possible features include traction control, ride modes, and a quickshifter on higher variants.

Yamaha R2 Engine
Power could come from a new 200cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, possibly with variable valve actuation for smooth delivery. It is expected to produce 23-26 hp and 19-21 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed gearbox and slipper clutch.
The R2 should be quicker than the R15, with an expected top speed of around 150 km/h and mileage of around 30 km/l. It focuses on a balance of performance and efficiency for city and highway use.
Yamaha R2 Expected Price
The Yamaha R2 could be priced from about ₹2 lakh to ₹2.2 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a value upgrade from the R15. It will compete with bikes like the KTM RC 200 and Bajaj Pulsar RS200.
While there are speculations that the R2 will replace the R15, it seems unlikely that Yamaha will discontinue a popular, hot-selling model. The R2 will slot in between the R15 and R3 in Yamaha's lineup.
