Our Recommendation For Most BuyersSkoda Slavia
The old Slavia's one meaningful advantage over its Volkswagen twin is that it use to offer the 150hp turbo with a manual gearbox, and that matters more than it first appears. It means you can have the strongest engine in this segment without accepting the dry dual-clutch that has failed on enough cars to make owners genuinely wary.
If you enjoy driving and want the bigger engine, that combination alone is the reason to choose Skoda here. The 1.0 turbo with the automatic remains the sensible everyday alternative. Its larger boot and the subwoofer are small practical wins that owners notice, though service coverage remains the same concern as with the Virtus.
Volkswagen Virtus
The Virtus is best specified with the 1.0 turbo and the torque-converter automatic, which sidesteps the dual-clutch entirely while remaining smooth and quick enough for almost any use. That gearbox choice is the single most important decision in either of these cars, because the dry unit fitted to the 1.5 has left owners stranded often enough that many plan for a failure rather than hope against one.
If you want the bigger engine here, that gearbox is unavoidable, which is precisely where the Slavia offers a way out. Check where your nearest workshop is before committing, since service coverage is the practical weakness of both.
