Mahindra introduced the XEV 9e in late 2024 as part of its Electric Origin lineup, built on the dedicated INGLO skateboard platform. The design follows a bold, angular aesthetic with coupe-like roofline proportions, giving it a distinctive silhouette from its rivals.

Power comes from a single rear-mounted motor, with outputs varying by battery pack. The 59 kWh version produces 231 hp, while the 79 kWh unit steps up to 285 hp, both delivering 380 Nm of torque.

Inside, the cabin’s legroom and headroom is aided by the long wheelbase. Higher trims add a Harman Kardon audio system with Dolby Atmos, while wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported alongside over-the-air updates for infotainment, vehicle functions, and the powertrain.

In addition, comfort features include ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a gesture-operated tailgate in top variants.

Safety is another key area, with it receiving a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with near-perfect adult occupant protection scores. Equipment includes up to seven airbags, an electronic stability program, and ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and 360-degree cameras in higher packs.

Battery and Motor

The XEV 9e uses a rear-wheel-drive electric motor paired with either a 59 kWh or 79 kWh battery pack. Motor output ranges from 170 kW in lower variants to 210 kW in the top 79 kWh variant, while torque remains consistent at 380 Nm across the line-up.

In addition, acceleration from 0-100 km/h is claimed at around 6.8 seconds in the higher-output version, with a top speed of about 200 km/h.

Range and Charging

Official MIDC (P1 + P2) range stands at 522 km for 59 kWh variants and 656 km for 79 kWh variants.

Charging supports CCS2 standard, where Mahindra claims DC fast charging achieves 20-80% in about 20 minutes using 140-180 kW input depending on the pack. Meanwhile, AC charging uses 7.2 kW or 11 kW wall boxes for 0-100% in 6-8.7 hours.

interior

Inside, the XEV 9e’s dashboard follows a clean, minimal layout, with soft-wrapped surfaces and improved door trims appearing in higher variants. Capacitive touch controls are integrated into the steering wheel and dashboard, while the leatherette-wrapped steering wheel includes an e-shifter and supports both tilt and telescopic adjustment.

Moving to infotainment, it supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with built-in Amazon Alexa and ChatGPT integration. It also offers 5G connectivity and access to Mahindra’s Fun&Work suite with app store support. Higher trims add a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos, VenueScapes and a Vision X augmented-reality head-up display.

In addition, video calling via in-car camera and BYOD device mounts for rear passengers further expand the digital experience.

Seats use premium fabric in base variants and leatherette higher up. The driver’s seat is 6-way power adjustable with lumbar support and memory function, while top variants add front seat ventilation.

At the rear, passengers get a 60:40 split bench with adjustable headrests, multi-step recline, and a centre armrest with cup holders. The long wheelbase also helps provide some knee room and headroom.

exterior

The XEV 9e measures 4,789 mm in length, 1,907 mm in width, and 1,694 mm in height, with a 2,775 mm wheelbase. Its front features BI-LED projector headlamps paired with LED DRLs and an illuminated logo, while higher variants add centre signature lamps and sequential turn indicators. This design emphasises a wide, muscular stance with aero elements.

From the side, the coupe-SUV roofline slopes toward the rear while maintaining upright proportions. It rides on 19-inch alloys (245/55 R19 tyres) with a T135/80 R18 spare, while ground clearance stands at 207 mm (218 mm at the battery), aiding some off-road capability. Higher packs also add electrically deployed flush door handles.

At the rear, LED tail lamps form a full-width signature with sequential indicators and an illuminated logo, while a rear spoiler complements the profile.

Boot volume measures 663 litres, with an additional 150-litre frunk. Higher variants also include a drain hole and tonneau cover.

safety

The XEV 9e’s safety includes 6 or 7 airbags (the latter adding a driver knee airbag), ISOFIX child seat anchors, and an electronic stability program (ESP). Meanwhile, ADAS features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and high beam assist.

Meanwhile, higher packs expand by adding blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, autonomous emergency steering, and highway assist with auto lane change.

To support overall visibility and monitoring, camera systems progress from a standard reverse camera to a 360-degree view featuring a blind view monitor and secure live recording. Finally, tyre pressure monitoring, an electronic park brake, and a rear defogger with auto defogging round out the package.

As for crash test scores, the XEV 9e holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating with 32/32 for adult occupant protection and 45/49 for child occupant protection.

competition

The XEV 9e competes primarily with the Tata Harrier EV and BYD Atto 3 in its segment.

Against the Tata Harrier EV, the XEV 9e offers a higher claimed range (up to 656 km vs lower figures for Harrier) and a more coupe-oriented design with larger boot space. Tata counters with potentially stronger brand loyalty in EVs and a more traditional SUV profile that some buyers prefer for rear headroom.

Whereas against the Atto 3, the XEV 9e provides superior dimensions, wheelbase, and claimed range while delivering higher power outputs in top variant. Conversely, the Atto 3 holds an edge in established build quality perception from BYD's global EV expertise and a more upright design that maximises interior height for some passengers.
