Rate & Win ₹1000

The Hero Super Splendor XTEC, currently on sale in India, represents an evolution of the quintessential commuter motorcycle, now equipped with a BS6 Phase 2 compliant engine. Its standout strength lies in its comprehensive digital features package, which includes Bluetooth connectivity and a real-time mileage indicator, a rarity in this segment. It offers a balanced proposition of efficiency and technology but faces stiff competition from established rivals like the Honda Shine 125 and the sportier TVS Raider 125, each catering to specific buyer priorities within the competitive 125cc market.

Engine, Performance and Mileage

The Super Splendor XTEC is powered by a 124.7cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that adheres to the latest BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. This unit produces 10.7 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 10.6 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. A significant specification for this segment is the inclusion of a 5-speed constant mesh transmission, where rivals like the Bajaj CT 125X still employ a 4-speed unit. In real-world urban commuting, the engine’s strength is its low-end tractability. The torque is accessible early in the rev range, minimizing the need for frequent gear changes in dense traffic. Throttle response is linear and predictable, suitable for new riders.

On open roads, the fifth gear proves its utility by allowing the engine to cruise at speeds of 60-70 km/h with reduced strain and vibration compared to 4-speed counterparts. Refinement levels are acceptable for a workhorse commuter, though they do not match the benchmark set by the Honda Shine 125. Hero's i3S (Idle Stop-Start System) contributes to its claimed fuel efficiency of 68 km/l. In mixed city and highway conditions, owners can realistically expect between 55 and 60 km/l, a competitive figure for its class.

posture comfort

Ergonomically, the Super Splendor XTEC is designed for long hours in the saddle without causing fatigue. The riding posture is upright, with a comfortable reach to the handlebar and neutrally positioned footpegs. The single-piece seat is long and well-padded, providing ample support for both the rider and the pillion. At 799mm, the seat height is accessible to a wide range of riders. Pillion comfort is addressed with a practical grab rail and adequately placed footpegs. From a practicality standpoint, the motorcycle scores well. Its 180mm of ground clearance is generous, enabling it to tackle tall speed breakers and poor road surfaces without scraping the underbelly.

The engine, being a small-capacity air-cooled unit, exhibits excellent heat management, with no noticeable heat directed towards the rider's legs in stop-and-go traffic. While it lacks dedicated underseat storage, the provision of a saree guard and the potential to mount a small luggage rack make it suitable for carrying small loads. Overall, its design is focused on delivering a hassle-free and comfortable daily commuting experience for one or two occupants.

handling ride quality

Built on a tubular diamond frame, the Super Splendor XTEC’s chassis and suspension are engineered primarily for ride comfort. The front features conventional telescopic forks, while the rear employs 5-step adjustable hydraulic shock absorbers. This setup is adept at absorbing the undulations and broken patches common on Indian city roads, providing a pliant ride at low to moderate speeds. Its handling characteristics are neutral and confidence-inspiring for daily commutes. With a kerb weight of 123 kg (disc variant) and a narrow profile, filtering through traffic is effortless. However, the motorcycle is not designed for aggressive cornering; pushing it hard reveals a soft suspension tune that prioritizes stability over agility. High-speed stability is adequate for a commuter, though crosswinds can be felt.

The braking hardware consists of an optional 240mm front disc and a standard 130mm rear drum, linked by an Integrated Braking System (IBS). While the front disc offers satisfactory initial bite and progressive feedback, the absence of a single-channel ABS is a notable omission. The IBS, which actuates both brakes partially when the rear brake is applied, is a basic safety aid but is not a substitute for the superior control offered by an Anti-lock Braking System, especially in panic-braking scenarios.

Design

The "XTEC" suffix signifies this model's primary differentiator: its technology and features package. Visually, the design is a conservative evolution of the trusted Splendor family silhouette, unlikely to polarize buyers. However, the equipment level is a significant step up. The headlamp is a full-LED unit with an integrated High-Intensity Position Lamp (HIPL), offering better illumination and visibility compared to the halogen units on base-level competitors. The centerpiece is the fully digital LCD instrument cluster, which is comprehensive for this price point. It displays essential data like a speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and trip meters. More advanced readouts include a real-time mileage indicator, which helps riders optimize their riding style for maximum efficiency.

The cluster also integrates Bluetooth connectivity for call and SMS alerts, a practical feature that minimizes distractions. An integrated USB charging port positioned below the handlebar adds another layer of utility for the modern commuter. These features collectively elevate the user experience beyond that of a purely utilitarian motorcycle, making it a compelling option for buyers who value modern conveniences.

safety

The safety suite on the Hero Super Splendor XTEC is standard for its segment but falls short of setting new benchmarks. The primary safety feature is the braking system. The motorcycle is equipped with an Integrated Braking System (IBS), which is a regulatory requirement for two-wheelers up to 125cc without ABS. This system mechanically links the rear and front brakes, ensuring that applying one engages the other to a certain degree, theoretically reducing stopping distances and preventing rudimentary skids. However, it is crucial to understand that IBS is not a replacement for an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). In wet conditions or during emergency braking, the wheels can still lock, a risk that ABS is specifically designed to mitigate.

The optional 240mm front disc brake provides superior stopping power over the drum variant, making it the recommended choice. Active safety is enhanced by the bright LED headlamp, which improves nighttime visibility significantly over older halogen technology. The mandatory side-stand engine cut-off feature prevents accidental starts with the stand deployed. While these features meet the current regulations, the lack of even a single-channel ABS option is a missed opportunity, especially as competitors in the premium 125cc space are beginning to offer it.

competition

Honda Shine 125:

The segment leader, the Honda Shine 125’s core differentiator is its engine. The 123.94cc Honda motor is renowned for its exceptional refinement, quiet operation, and proven long-term reliability. While it may not match the XTEC’s digital feature list, it offers a marginally smoother and more vibration-free ride, making it the choice for buyers who prioritize mechanical excellence above all else.

TVS Raider 125:

Positioned as a sporty commuter, the TVS Raider 125's clear differentiator is performance and modern appeal. It produces more power (11.2 bhp), features a sportier design, and offers a more engaging riding experience. Its top variant includes a colour TFT display and riding modes, targeting a younger demographic willing to pay a premium for performance and cutting-edge technology.

Bajaj CT 125X:

The Bajaj CT 125X differentiates itself with its rugged, no-nonsense build quality. It is designed for durability and semi-urban or rural environments, featuring a metal bash plate, a rear luggage rack, and protective crash guards as standard. It forgoes flashy digital features for a more robust and utilitarian package, appealing to buyers who need a tough workhorse.

buying advice

Who should buy it?

The practical commuter who values modern technology. If you want a reliable, fuel-efficient 125cc motorcycle with a digital console, Bluetooth alerts, and a USB charger straight from the factory, the Super Splendor XTEC is a well-rounded and logical choice.

Who should skip it?

Buyers for whom safety or performance is the absolute priority. If you want the superior safety of ABS or a more powerful, engaging engine, competitors like the TVS Raider 125 present a more compelling argument, albeit at a slightly higher price point.
