Engine, Performance and Mileage

The Hero Mavrick 440 is powered by a 440cc, single-cylinder, air-and-oil-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve engine, compliant with BS6 Phase 2 norms. This unit produces 27 bhp at 6,000 rpm and a substantial 36 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The key engineering highlight is the torque delivery; Hero claims 90% of peak torque is available from just 2,000 rpm. In real-world application, this translates to exceptional tractability. In city traffic, the motorcycle allows for riding in higher gears at lower speeds, significantly reducing the need for frequent gear shifts. 

The throttle response is linear and predictable, devoid of any unwelcome abruptness. On the highway, the engine settles into a comfortable cruise between 80-100 km/h in sixth gear. The 6-speed transmission, equipped with a slip-and-assist clutch, offers light lever action and smooth shifts, mitigating rider fatigue. However, the engine's 2-valve architecture prioritises low-end grunt over high-rpm performance. Pushing past 6,000 rpm reveals noticeable vibrations and a tapering of power, indicating it is not engineered for aggressive, top-end acceleration. Fuel efficiency is expected to be in the 28-32 kmpl range under mixed riding conditions, a respectable figure for its displacement.

Ergonomics are a clear strength of the Mavrick 440. The motorcycle offers a neutral, upright riding posture with a wide handlebar and mid-set footpegs. This relaxed triangle reduces strain on the rider's back and wrists, making it suitable for long hours in the saddle. The seat height is 803 mm, which should be accessible for riders of average height in India. The single-piece seat itself is well-padded and spacious enough for both the rider and pillion, although the pillion section is slightly tapered. 

The grab rail is a functional and well-integrated unit. For a 440cc air-and-oil-cooled engine, heat management in dense traffic is a critical consideration. The Mavrick manages engine heat reasonably well, with no excessive heat directed towards the rider's legs during prolonged stops. The 13.5-litre fuel tank, combined with an estimated mileage of around 30 kmpl, provides a practical touring range of approximately 380-400 kilometres on a full tank. While dedicated luggage mounting points are absent, the sturdy subframe and grab rail offer viable anchor points for aftermarket luggage solutions like saddlebags or tail bags.

The Mavrick 440 is constructed on a steel trellis frame, suspended by 43mm telescopic front forks and 7-step preload-adjustable twin rear shock absorbers. This chassis and suspension combination is explicitly tuned for ride comfort. The setup adeptly absorbs most road imperfections, from broken tarmac to undulations, providing a pliant and composed ride that is well-suited for Indian road conditions. At highway speeds, the motorcycle maintains excellent straight-line stability, aided by its 187 kg kerb weight. However, it is not an inherently sharp-handling machine. 

While competent through long, sweeping corners, quick directional changes require deliberate effort. The 17-inch wheels at both ends (a departure from the X440's 18/17-inch setup) lend it a degree of agility for city filtering, but it does not possess the nimbleness of lighter competitors like the Triumph Speed 400. The braking hardware consists of a 320mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc, governed by a standard dual-channel ABS. The system provides adequate stopping power with progressive feedback, inspiring confidence without being overly aggressive. The setup is calibrated for safe, predictable deceleration rather than outright performance braking.

Design

The Mavrick 440 adopts a modern neo-roadster design language, differentiating itself from the cruiser-esque styling of its platform sibling. The aesthetic is characterised by a muscular 13.5-litre fuel tank with sharp extensions, a round headlamp, and a minimal tail section. The lighting system is all-LED, featuring a projector headlamp with an H-shaped DRL that offers good illumination spread and intensity for night riding. The instrument cluster is a negative LCD unit, which displays a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, gear position indicator, and trip meters. While legible, it lacks the premium feel of the TFT screens found on some competitors. 

The top-spec variant is equipped with a suite of connected features accessible via Bluetooth. These include turn-by-turn navigation, incoming call and SMS alerts, and phone battery status, all displayed on the console. A practical USB-C charging port is also provided. These features enhance the motorcycle's utility for daily commuting and touring, allowing riders to navigate and stay connected without mounting a separate device. The overall build quality and finish are commensurate with expectations for a product from Hero’s premium portfolio.

Hero has equipped the Mavrick 440 with a robust set of safety features as standard across all variants. The most critical component is the dual-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). This system prevents wheel lock-up during hard or emergency braking on both the front and rear wheels, significantly enhancing rider control, particularly on slippery or unpredictable surfaces. The ABS intervention is well-calibrated, avoiding premature activation while providing a reliable safety net when required. The braking hardware, with its large 320mm front disc, provides the necessary foundation for the ABS to work effectively. 

Further enhancing safety is the all-LED lighting package, including the projector headlamp. This not only improves the rider's visibility of the road ahead during night or low-light conditions but also makes the motorcycle more conspicuous to other road users. A standard side-stand engine cut-off sensor prevents accidental riding with the stand deployed. However, it is important to note that the Mavrick 440 does not feature advanced electronic aids like traction control, which is available on its direct competitor, the Triumph Speed 400. While its current safety suite is competent for the segment, the absence of traction control is a notable omission for a new 2024 model.
